Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which the practitioner puts special cups, usually made from glass, on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. Dry needling and acupuncture usually involve tiny needles that are used therapeutically on the skin. While a shared aim is to provide relief from pain, the practices of dry needling and acupuncture are otherwise very different philosophically. Dry needling is primarily used to release tension from knots and pressure points in muscles.
Cupping for Pain Relief
Cupping is a type of therapy used at Synergy Chiropractic of Houston to help alleviate pain felt by our patients. Other than a bruise appearance when the cup is removed, there is little to no side effects that occur. Cupping suctions up on the skin and muscles forcing blood to the area. This helps the healing process along. We have used this technique combined with dry needling to help patients who suffer from pain related to:
- sports injuries
- motor vehicle accidents
- muscle spasms
- slip and fall injuries
- tight muscles
- chronic pain
- fibromyalgia
- and more
Combining Cupping and Dry Needling
The combined dry needling and cupping technique used in our office release endorphins into the blood stream. Endorphins help decrease pain and relax muscles. These are then pulled to the target area by the cups and the needles help the muscles to relax. The cups are warm when placed on the skin which also helps relax the muscles. An ice pack can also be place on top of the cups to get a truly unique heating to cooling sensation that many of our patients enjoy.
After everything is in place, Dr. Reece will make sure the patient is comfortable before stepping out of the room for approximately 15 minutes. During this time, most of our patients are able to relax and get a quick nap in while their body does its thing. Common issues that patients have received relief from pain include:
- chronic back pain
- knee pain (check out this awesome testimonial from a patient)
- shoulder pain
- neck pain
- foot pain
- plantar fascitis
- headaches
- and more
